What you need
- A roll of masking tape
- Toy cars
- A stretch of hard floor
The return on this one is unreasonable. Four minutes of setup regularly produces forty minutes of play, and the whole thing costs a roll of tape.
How to set it up
- Clear a stretch of hard floor — hallway, kitchen, living room.
- Lay two parallel strips of masking tape about 15cm apart to make a road. Wind it around furniture legs and through doorways.
- Add junctions, a roundabout, and a car park marked out as a rectangle with bays.
- Hand over the cars and step back.
Why it works
It gives structure without giving rules. There is no right way to play with a road, so the child directs it entirely, which is what makes it last. It also scales: a two-year-old pushes cars along a line, a five-year-old invents traffic systems.
Practical notes
Test the tape on a hidden corner of your floor first — masking tape lifts cleanly from most sealed hard floors but can mark some finishes. Avoid it on wood with a delicate wax. Take it up within a day or two; the longer it sits, the more residue it leaves.
Extending it
Add a strip of blue tape for a river with a bridge over it. Draw simple road signs on paper and tape them to bricks. Once the layout exists, additions cost nothing.
