What you need

  • Cushions and pillows
  • Folded blankets
  • A table for a tunnel
  • Floor space

This is the wet-afternoon activity for when a child has energy and there is nowhere to put it. Setup is two minutes and it can be rebuilt endlessly, which is most of the appeal.

How to set it up

  1. Gather every cushion, pillow and folded blanket you are willing to have on the floor.
  2. Lay a route across the room: stepping stones with gaps, a pile to climb, a blanket tunnel under a table, a cushion to jump onto at the end.
  3. Walk it once yourself so they see the idea, then hand it over.

Why it works

It is genuinely physical, which is what the situation actually calls for, and the route can be changed every few minutes to restart interest. Children also start designing their own version quickly, which is when it stops needing you.

Practical notes

Keep it away from hard corners, fireplaces and glass. Jumping targets should land on something soft and stay low — sofa arms are higher than they look. Stay in the room for younger children.

Extending it

Time a lap and try to beat it. Add a rule — no hands, or carrying a teddy. Ask them to design the course for you to attempt, which is usually the funniest version.
