What you need
- Masking tape
- A muffin tin and small objects
- A paintbrush and water
The measure of a good activity on a hard afternoon is not how impressive it looks. It is how long it holds attention relative to how long it takes you to set up. These three earn their keep.
Tape roads
A roll of masking tape and a hard floor. Lay out roads, junctions and a car park; the setup takes four minutes and the play often runs for forty. Tape lifts cleanly from most floors, though it is worth testing a corner first.
The sorting tray
A muffin tin and a bowl of mixed objects — buttons, pasta shapes, pom-poms, coins if your child is past putting things in their mouth. Sorting by colour, then by size, then by whatever rule they invent. It is quiet, it is repeatable, and it costs nothing.
Paint with water
A paintbrush, a cup of water and a paving slab or fence outside. They paint, it dries, they paint again. No mess, no cleanup, and on a warm day it can absorb most of an afternoon.
The common thread: low setup, no perfect outcome, and nothing that needs your constant supervision. Save the glitter for a day when you have the energy for what follows.
