Oat Bars Without a Food Processor
★★★★★

Most oat bar recipes ask for a food processor, which turns a ten-minute job into a twenty-minute one with washing up. This is the bowl-and-spoon version.

Equipment

  • 20cm (8-inch) square baking tin
  • Parchment paper
  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 180C fan and line a 20cm square tin.
  2. Melt the butter, honey and sugar together in a pan over low heat until smooth.
  3. Take off the heat, stir in the oats and mashed banana, then the seeds or raisins.
  4. Press firmly into the tin — firmly is the operative word, or they crumble.
  5. Bake 20 minutes until golden at the edges. Cool completely in the tin before cutting.

Notes

  • They must cool fully or they fall apart; an hour is not optional. Keeps five days in a tin, or freeze cut bars. Check any seeds or dried fruit are appropriate for your child’s age — whole nuts and large seeds are not suitable for young children.
