Breakfast is the meal where a decision costs the most, because it happens at the hour with the least patience. Overnight oats move that decision to the evening.

Equipment

  • Glass mason jars or bowls with lids
  • Measuring spoons

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Put the oats, milk and yoghurt in a jar or bowl and stir.
  2. Add your flavour (below), stir again, cover and refrigerate overnight.
  3. Eat cold, straight from the fridge. It keeps for three days.

Four flavours

Apple and cinnamon. Half a grated apple and a good pinch of cinnamon.

Banana and peanut butter. Half a mashed banana and a heaped teaspoon of smooth peanut butter.

Berry. A handful of frozen berries, added straight from the freezer — they defrost overnight and colour the whole jar.

Cocoa. A teaspoon of cocoa and a teaspoon of maple syrup.

Notes

  • Make three jars at once on a Sunday and breakfast is handled to Wednesday. If you are introducing nut butters to a young child, follow current guidance from your health visitor or doctor rather than a recipe.
