The short version
- AI is strong at drafting, sorting and rephrasing.
- It is unreliable on facts, dates, numbers and anything about your child's health.
- Treat every output as a first draft from an eager assistant.
Most advice about AI is either breathless or dismissive. Neither helps when you have twenty minutes and a list. Here is the practical version: what these tools reliably do well, and where they will quietly let you down.
What it is genuinely good at
Drafting things you find tedious. The nursery email, the birthday invite, the note to the teacher, the message declining an invitation politely. It gets you to eighty per cent instantly, and editing is far faster than starting.
Turning a mess into a structure. Paste in a jumble of notes and ask for a list, a table or a schedule. Sorting and reformatting is where these tools are strongest.
Options when you are stuck. Twenty snack ideas using what is in the cupboard. Ten indoor activities for a rainy afternoon. You will discard most, but you only need one.
Explaining something at the right level. Ask it to explain how a mortgage overpayment works, or what a school report term means, in plain language.
Where it falls down
Facts, dates and numbers. It will produce a confident answer that is wrong, and it will not flag the difference. Anything with a real consequence — opening times, prices, dosages, deadlines — needs checking at the source.
Anything about your family’s health. Do not use it for symptoms, medications, allergies or feeding decisions. It cannot know your circumstances, and the failure mode is serious. Take those to a professional who can.
Quantities and timings in practical tasks. Recipes and craft instructions from AI often look right and do not work. Scan them before you shop.
Anything needing genuine local knowledge. It does not know which soft play is any good.
The one habit that makes it useful
Treat every response as a first draft from an eager assistant who has never met you. Enthusiastic, fast, occasionally confidently wrong. Read it before you use it and you will get most of the benefit and few of the problems.
